This is the brilliant opening statement (set to visuals) that Christopher Hitchens gave in a religion vs. atheism debate with Alister McGrath on October 11, 2007. Instead of simply watching Hitchens at the podium, here the speech's audio is overlayed with illustations to try to do justice to the logic of this very compelling argument.

    Yes the "best" way to intervene was the Son of God's sacrifice in the Middle Eastern city of Jerusalem under Roman occupation. The question is "Why?' the Answer is quite dynamic and more expensive than a single sound bite, or what I can provide here, but here is how to begin thinking about it and how to see more of what was "going on" with God's choice to do it as such. 1) yes humans have been around for a long time, and God has indeed intervened in spiritual and historical ways with people(that is with ancient Jews specifically and with other groups, unrecorded). *God is God of the whole world and all people and works subtlety with them, but he is specifically God of the Jews(historically) like the wind is everywhere but is manifestly some places. So too God is everywhere but manifestly present some places with some people... This was the special calling of the Jews to be "manifestly" his people, so the world would know what God is like. Certainly there must be groups and factions and tribes so that we might know what are better and more accurate at certain things. Jews by God's divine choice are that people. So the Messiah, that is Jesus, God's "Salvation" was going to also come through the Jews. And thus naturally would take place in the location where the Jews were. 2) the nature of Jesus's specific intervention is understood from the Levitical priests role of performing sacrifice to make clean, or cover for sin. This is a specific spiritual sort of "issue" of mankind, which is done by priests on mankind's behalf. Just like the Levitical priests performed the temple sacrifices for the people, without most of the people really being that aware. Jesus was preforming a "truer/more universal" sacrifice for all of mankind, in the same vein/nature of what the Levitical priests were doing. You have to understand their work to understand what Jesus was doing. *Are there lots of other human needs, water, food, justice, peace, safety, love, etc etc etc, that need fixing? Yes, of course. And God does guide and move in those ways (often without our explicit knowing) but those needs were not what Jesus was doing. He came for that very specific spiritual need, that was his true work of the cross. Salvation from spiritual issue caused by sin. 3) Jesus came "at just the right time". Why 2000s ago was the right time is a bit of a mystery, but a few things to note a) this was the time prophesied by Daniel. So in keeping with the Jewish Prophesy this was the "right" time. Notice the right time is not dependent on human need or worldly "best" moments but on right timing in accordance with "Prophesy". B) Jerusalem was at the Center of the world, at least when it comes to major trade routes and the intersection of major empires; Egypt and access to the African nations, Greece and access to the European nations,and Meso-persia and the eastern empires. Alexander the Great had gone and conquered much establishing his infrastructure across these areas and then Rome comes and builds all its roads. So the world was being curated with infrastructure, to allow for the movement of people and ideas. So Jesus came at a "fitted time" at least. This was a far more fitted time than say the hunter and gather period. Or even now days. So Hitchens is thinking like a common person, but if ones thinks larger, and with a higher perspective on the history and specifics, one hopefully can begin to see the actual answers to why Jesus came and what he did. There is far far more to understanding, but this is a decent opening of the door for now. 😊 God Bless everyone, especially God's Children!

    “That we must simultaneously love and be terrified of at the same time.” I think Hitchens missed the opportunity to deconstruct another moral failing of religion-It tries to fool people into believing that there is virtue in naked cowardice.

    Old Testament God: (God creates and destroys) god was mad at man for not "understanding" or even worse, deliberately going against his great plan. God banished Adam and Eve from paradise and destroyed many civilizations after due to sin. God considered even not "understanding" a sin. But god did not "understand" his own creations fully yet. God Allows Blood sacrifice at this time as well due to not being happy or not "understanding" his creations. New Testament God: (God "understands" and saves) A man of Nazareth devoted his life to connecting the true "understanding" between man and god. Knowing the true word of god aka "Understanding" 100% the meaning of the teachings and not the militarized version called religion, God was pleased and looked to Jesús a lot to help spread the understanding to his human creations. God considered Jesus weak because he did not kill human nor animal. Jesus never sacrificed an animal whilst talking with god as the people around him and people before him always have because god encouraged it. It seems this man "understands" God more than the men who sacrifice and this pleased God. When Jesús was being crucified he did not ever wish death upon his captors or even asked God to release him. He looked at the sky and said the most important thing that a man has ever said to god. Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. In this moment God finally "understood" his human creations mind. Also realized that Jesus wasn't weak after all. He was in fact the strongest of them all. He did not sacrifice hundreds of sheep like the others. He sacrificed himself. Jesú

    • @sizzles333
      @sizzles333 7 місяців тому

      After that, God "understood and started to save more of his creations. Does not accept blood sacrifice anymore because he gave Jesús a reward when he died and Jesus asked for no more blood sacrifices as his reward and God was even amazed by his contribution to the human race and granted him his reward.

    If you are still thinking about a guy in a cloud, that was never realistic it was a metaphor. There is us existing rather than the most sane notion of nothing. Its much easier to have nothing than the anomaly that we are. Stop thinking about god as santa. Its truly the most fundamental element of your cells and atoms. Thats what god is. If you don’t believe in god you really haven’t thought hard enough about it. You even seeing an outside thing is fucking impossible. Ask an engineer how he could create us.

    Not the fact that and are not the fact and the fact that there's morally wrong for somebody to be punished and beaten and murdered for something that they did not do to resolve someone else's immoral evil but Christianity it literally States thou shalt not murder a lot of people say kill because some Bibles that said that but it's actually used thou shalt not murder because if you're protecting yourself from somebody that's trying to murder you and you kill them that's not murder that's self protection they forced you to end their life to save your own justifiably of people some people are like oh it's not right well of course it is do you think that life gave you life or whatever you think gave you life gave you life just so you could be murdered by somebody else does that make any sense at all or any purpose or any point to creating something and having it living or even if it's just naturally sprouted and came to life it's purpose is to live and I would dare say to try and live life to its fullest because we have very little time now if we lived forever we would have no real meaning of why we're alive in the first place because it takes the fact that we're alive out of the equation

  • @ljsmooth69
    @ljsmooth69 Рік тому

    Well where did we get these morals from if it wasn't for faith? My question would be where did the morals come from to begin with because the more values obviously were there before Faith came into the picture moral values come from what you experience and the emotion that it brings that makes you sad or happy see morals people think are just things we got morality if that's bad you shouldn't be doing it that's morality that's all always something what they say but makes you happy that's awesome morality and if it makes you happy it's not going to make everybody happy but it will make other people happy too so making people happy is also a part of morality that's never told to anybody when it should be it's never brought up about the good side of morality that's all the good side of morality is not murdering someone well yeah that's that's a good moral value and idea to have but having a good moral value making someone happier in their life with your moral value views or how you treat them like do on to others have you would have done unto you since we're talking Christianity here that is a more immoral ethical idea that created the value of if you don't want it to be done to you you shouldn't be doing it to others that's obviously common sense do you do things to other people that you don't want well I shouldn't ask that cuz most of these sapiens running around on the planet do they don't care it happens to them and they don't even care why is that because well quite frankly I can't tell you except that if the epitome of evil was founded today on who or what or the definition of pure chaotic evil is it would be us the genius homo species that is sapien I can't speak about the other races before us that were of the genus homo species like Neanderthal or erectus or any of the other one other ones there are just off top of my head not all together I do think so you know that's exactly what the ancient Sumerians said that they had that they went back in genetically made humans nine different times it said I wonder how they knew that they couldn't nobody could possibly know that how many would happen specially years centuries decades after they're dead there's no possible way you can know that unless it actually happened how would they know about genetically altering first place let alone being able to incubate the baby with a surrogate mother this all kinds of stuff that simply cannot be explained when it comes to the cradle of civilization in the ancient Samaritans.

    He died 6 years before I was cognizant of the fact that I have never perceived a deity or a logical reason to accept a supernatural claim. I know nothing about him beyond the fact that he's apparently a famous writer. I don't care to read any of his books, but it's good to know that someone perceived the claims made and stories told about deities in a manner very similar to my own perceptions of such claims and stories. In 38 years of trying relentlessly and constantly failing to make logical sense of religion, I am yet to hear of a way to say things like "God is good" or "God is love" without reversing the definitions of the words "good" and "love". Calling a deity good is calling good evil. Calling a deity or the worshipper of a deity loving is calling hatred loving. Moral, loving, trustworthy people and people who are safe to be around simply lack the ability to call a deity moral, loving, trustworthy, or in any context good.

    The commandment in Hebrew actually says, "You shall not make the Name of your Elohim [your God] of no significance" - The Almighty Father's Name is YeHoVaH, and His Son is named Yeshua Messiah. The catholic church was EXTREMELY successful in making the Name of The Almighty and of The Messiah of "No Significance" - "COME OUT OF HER, MY PEOPLE!" - Jeremiah 51: 45 and Revelation 18: 4

    God is busy stopping the work of our adversary, the sinner, who masquerades charismatically as an agent of light and a genius, but is false and lowly. God is sympathetic to matters in life for all people, whether your opinion or someone else's. Consider notions greater than your own self and your aimless mortal wants.
